International Medical Education and Research

For those students wishing to explore international medicine, the Medical School has affiliation agreements with 25 medical schools around the world, from Sweden's Karolinska Institute to Uganda's Makerere University, through its office of International Medical Education and Research. The IMER office helps students and faculty transcend boundaries as they learn about health in international settings or pursue curriculum about international health.

Among other things, the IMER office:

  • provides information to students and faculty about international health programs;
  • gathers information for University of Minnesota students and faculty about third- and fourth-year elective experiences in international medicine (including identifying faculty advisors for specific programs, foreign and local);
  • collaborates with the Dean;s Office and faculty to assess and evaluate the quality of sites and the educational value of student experiences at those sites; and
  • maintains a network of connections and aid to support those interested in pursuing a pathway in international health.
