International Students

International students include both international citizens or U.S. citizens educated outside of the United States and Canada.

In order to be eligible to apply to the University of Minnesota Medical School, international prospective applicants must:

  • Hold a baccalaureate degree or graduate degree from a college or university in the country of origin or from a university located in the continental United States or Canada.
  • Complete all prerequisite course requirements at an accredited U.S. or Canadian college or university.
  • Have taken the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT).
  • Be able to demonstrate proficiency (spoken and written) in the English language.

International applicants may apply either through the Early Decision Program or the regular admission process.

International citizen applicants are responsible for obtaining appropriate visa status in the United States.

International citizen applicants will be expected to assume total responsibility for financing their medical education. They should be prepared to present detailed financial plans of how they will provide the resources necessary to meet expenses, including tuition at the non-resident rate.

International citizens holding a medical degree (M.D.) from an overseas institution should contact Lori Payne in the Graduate Medical Education office for information on University of Minnesota residency/fellowship programs.

Additional information relating to international educational, research and other scholarly opportunities for medical/graduate students and faculty can be obtained through the International Medical Education and Research Program (IMER).
