Educational options


The Medical School offers a variety of educational options for students who wish to follow different paths to becoming doctors.

  • The Medical School – Duluth campus is designed for those considering a career in primary care, particularly family medicine, and who would like to practice in rural or Native American communities.
  • The overarching goal of the University of Minnesota’s Combined M.D./Ph.D. Program is to attract and challenge the most gifted students to obtain exceptional training in medicine and a research area of their choice, thereby preparing them for a leadership role in academic medicine.
  • Other joint degree programs:
    • M.D./M.P.H .Program meshes medical studies with a public health degree that will increase understanding of population-based science and the cultural and environmental factors that affect patients.
    • M.D./M.B.A. Program serves students with an interest in management or business who wish to earn an M.B.A. degree as well as their M.D. degree.
    • M.D./M.H.I. Program prepares medical students to understand the applications of information technology in medicine and for leadership positions in the field.
    • J.D./M.D. Program offers training in the legal, ethical, and policy problems posed by health, the sciences, and the environment.
    • M.D./M.S. Program gives medical students the opportunity to obtain master’s degree training in biomedical engineering.
