Transfer Policy
The University of Minnesota Medical School in the Twin Cities integrates the entire second year medical school class from its campus in Duluth into years 3 and 4. Therefore, it is difficult to accommodate other transfers and the Medical School has no formal transfer program.
Occasionally, exceptions can be made for compassionate reasons in order to prevent married couples or partners from being separated when one is a current faculty, staff, or student at the University of Minnesota and the other is enrolled in a medical school elsewhere. The number of transfers accepted will be limited to space available in the clinical rotations within the medical school.
In the rare occasions when outside transfers can be accommodated, the following conditions apply:
- Transfers are accepted only into the third year.
- Applicants must have taken and successfully passed Step 1 of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE).
- Applicants must be currently enrolled in a fully accredited U.S. allopathic medical school. No transfers are accepted from international or osteopathic medical schools.
- Transferring students must have academic qualifications that would have made them academically competitive with students originally accepted to the University of Minnesota Medical School.
- Transferring students must have the approval of the Dean of Student Affairs in their medical school.
- Applicants must provide written documentation verifying the basis of the transfer request.
- Applicants must be U.S. citizens or have a permanent resident visa.
Written requests for transfer applications must be submitted between December 1 and December 31 of the prior year. (Someone applying for fall 2010 entrance would need to request a transfer application between December 1 and December 31, 2009.) Upon approval, transfer application materials are sent to select applicants in January. The Medical School Office of Admissions must receive all application materials no later than March 1. Admission decisions will be sent by March 31.
If accepted, the applicant must be prepared to begin studies at the University of Minnesota Medical School in August of the year of entry.
Non-residents of Minnesota are reminded that non-resident tuition must be paid for a minimum of one year before residency can be obtained. Please see the tuition and fees web page for the most current fee structure.
If you wish to apply for transfer into the University of Minnesota Medical School, please send a written request with compassionate circumstances to:
