Description
The student will actively participate in all aspects of a busy anatomic pathology department based in a community hospital, with exposure to and responsibilities in surgical pathology including frozen section diagnosis, specimen examination, and dictation and microscopic evaluation and sign-out under supervision. The student will have the opportunity to observe and participate in the performance of autopsies during this rotation as well. The student will also participate in various regularly scheduled conferences. Each student's experience in the externship can be modified depending on individual background and experience.
Goals and Objectives
By the end of the elective the student should be able to:
- perform routine surgical pathology gross examinations and dictation;
- provide a reasonable differential diagnosis of the microscopic material;
- develop a microscopic dictation and surgical pathology report; and
- perform basic autopsy examinations.
Evaluation
Based on student performance.

- Six weeks in advance, students must contact the Course Director to confirm registration for this elective.
- This elective is intended primarily for the student who is considering the practice of pathology as a career.
- Noon meal and parking space provided by the department.
