Description

This course is designed to complete the required 12 weeks of experience in internal medicine begun in Medicine 7-500. Medicine 7-501 is a "sub-intership" in which students take direct responsibility for patient care. Therapeutic decision making and care planning are emphasized. Students will be part of a patient care team and assume responsibility for the evaluation and care of three new patients per week. Acute care tutorials with learning objectives and suggested readings are an important part of the course. Self-directed learning tools are available

Goals and Objectives

This course provides further opportunity for the student to expand on the skills and knowledge learned in the general medical setting of Med 7-500. It provides the opportunity for the student to participate in ongoing management of patients. The student will improve skills to:

  • communicate with patients, families and health care personnel;
  • perform medical histories and physical exams;
  • identify and prioritize patient problems;
  • develop a reasoned differential diagnosis and appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic management plan using principles of evidence-based medicine;
  • present the patient's case story; and
  • monitor and report on the patient's progress.

See Medicine's website for a more detailed description of objectives:  www.dom.umn.edu

Evaluation

At mid-rotation, formal feedback sessions with the resident and attending are expected following student self-assessment. At the course end, attending physicians and residents will provide written assessments of student performance. A written and clinical examination will be given during the final week of each period. This is a minimum-competency examination which must be passed in order to successfully complete the course. Students who fail this examination will be offered a make-up examination. The medicine clerkship committee is responsible for the final grade. Grading is O-H-S-N. Any student receiving an end-of-course evaluation which indicates a below expectations rating for any aspect of performance is at risk of receiving a grade of "N."
