Course Description
An introduction to principles of nutrition; selected topics from the broad multi-disciplinary field of nutrition will be used to introduce key basic concepts and to illustrate its importance in medicine.
Objectives
- Introduce the basic principles and vocabulary of nutrition and the critical relationship between nutrition and health.
- Provide students with insights into the current thinking and questions on selected issues related to nutrition and medicine.
- Emphasize the important relationship between nutrition and biochemistry/metabolism
Textbook
There is no formal text for this course. Lecture outlines will be handed out for each class. Selections of the BMCB text, Basic Medical Biochemistry, by D.B. Marks, A.D. Marks and C.M. Smith will be applicable to certain lectures. A supplementary textbook Perspectives in Nutrition (4th Edition) by Gordon Wardlaw [McGrawHill,1988], may be helpful for background. For students interersted in a good general introduction to nutrition for the physician, Fundamentals of Clinical Nutrition by Roland Weinsier and Sarah Morgan [Mosby, 1997] is recommended. Both books are on reserve in the Bio-Medical Library in Diehl Hall.
