Course Description
Physician and Patient 1 is the first course in history and physical exam which spans the first two years of medical school. This course emphasizes the knowledge, skills and attitudes that are critical to starting a career as a physician. Students become familiar with the student-physician role and the physician-patient relationship, learning basic interviewing skills, learn how to take a medical history, and learn the techniques of physical examination.
Objectives
Medical Interviewing: Demonstrate effective medical interviewing techniques, including:
- Effective and empathetic communication with patients, their families, and significant others
- Use proper balance of both doctor-centered and patient-centered techniques
- Interviewing patients of diverse ages and backgrounds
- Addressing patients' emotions in medical encounters
- Eliciting cogent and complete medical history, as outlined in the coursebook
Physical Exam: Conduct complete general exam as defined in Physical Exam Checklist, including:
- Performing exam in systematic and consistent order
- Skills of: inspection, palpation, percussion and auscultation
- Proper use of instruments, e.g., stethoscope
- Positioning of self and patient to optimize effectiveness, and ensure patient modesty and comfort
- Demonstrate knowledge of evidence-base for value of exam techniques
Written and Oral Case Presentations: Do appropriate case write-up and oral presentations, as outlined in the coursebook, including:
- History (including health risk assessment), exam, lab data, problem list and differential diagnosis
- Presentation of data in appropriate section, e.g., no exam findings under history of present illness
- Use of appropriate terminology and abbreviation
- Pertinent positives and negatives
Special Knowledge Skills: Demonstrate special knowledge, and data-gathering and problem-solving skills in various disciplines and settings, as outlined in coursebook.
