Course Objectives

Students will learn:

1) The basic principles of the pathogenesis of infectious diseases, including virulence factors of the pathogens, defense mechanisms of the host, and the host-pathogen interaction. Common bacterial pathogens and major sites of infection will be reviewed.

2) The spectrum of activity, major side effects, and the indications of use of commonly prescribed antibiotics

3) Selected topics which currently include the epidemiology of infectious diseaes, vaccines, emerging infections, and risk of infections to health care workers
