Service-Commitment Scholarship Programs

Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Program

The Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Program, essentially, offers full support (tuition, fees, and a monthly stipend) to the medical student while in medical school in exchange for service in the military once the scholarship recipient has completed the M.D. degree. These are very competitive scholarships and are based on GPAs and MCAT scores and not on financial need. You must be a U.S. citizen in order to be considered. National Health Service Corps Scholarship Program

For the 2009-10 school year, the NHSC offers scholarships providing payment of tuition and fees; payment toward books, supplies, and equipment; and 12 monthly stipends of approximately $1,269. Selected applicants have priority for continued financial support for up to four years based on availability of funds.

U.S. citizens attending U.S. allopathic or osteopathic medical schools are eligible to apply. For each year of support, recipients will serve one year providing full-time primary care in a health professional shortage area upon completion of training as assigned by the NHSC. The minimum service obligation is two years.

Priority for selection will be given to applicants: (1) who are prior recipients of the NHSC Scholarship Program; (2) who have primary care specialty goals; and (3) who come from disadvantaged backgrounds. The most important criterion is the applicant's commitment to be a primary healthcare provider in either family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, psychiatry, combined medicine/pediatrics, or geriatrics.

The application deadline is, generally, in late March.
