College Work-Study

Some work-study jobs, which can accommodate class schedules, are available for medical students. The College Work-Study Program helps students earn money toward their education while attending school. Under this program, the employer pays part of a student's wages and the government pays the rest. If a student is awarded work-study, the money may be used in conjunction with a Graduate Assistantship. Since work-study money for medical students is very limited, you must see a financial aid counselor and complete a separate College Work-Study application by March 1st to be considered.

Graduate Assistantships

Medical students are eligible to hold Graduate Assistantships as Research Assistants or Teaching Assistants. Students with a minimum of a 25 percent appointment, which equates to 10 hours per week, are eligible for remission of a portion of tuition. Furthermore, if a medical student is not a resident, the non-resident portion of the tuition is also remitted. In order to be eligible for the tuition remission benefit, 195 hours must be worked within the semester and summer payroll dates, which are not identical to the beginning of the Medical School semester. Appointments of more than 25% time will not be approved for any medical students. Approval is granted to students holding 25 percent appointments if they are not in academic difficulty. Further information about the benefits and stipulations of these appointments can be obtained from the Graduate Assistant Office, 170 Donhowe Building, 319 15th Ave. SE, Minneapolis, MN 55455, (612) 624-7070 or at www.umn.edu/ohr/gae.

Minnesota Medical Foundation (MMF) Student Research Grants

Student Research Grants offer a stipend of $4,000 for 3rd- and 4th-year medical students who wish to engage in an independent research project for 12 weeks. The purpose is to encourage an intensive research experience.

1st-year medical students may apply for an 8-week summer Research Grant for $3,000.
