In September 2010, then Medical School Dean Frank B. Cerra introduced faculty, students, and staff to the school's LCME self-study process via this website.
Dean's Welcome
The Liaison Committee for Medical Education (LCME), the accrediting body for the Medical School, has set our reaccreditation site visit for March 11–14, 2012. As the Medical School prepares for this site visit, we will conduct a year long, comprehensive self-study focused on “One Medical School – Two Tracks”. The self-study process which will be launched in October 2010 will include a critical analysis of the Medical School in the following areas designated by the LCME:
- Institutional Setting
- Educational Program for the M.D. Degree
- Medical Students
- Faculty
- Educational Resources
We have recently completed a review of the Medical School’s alignment with the LCME standards with particular attention to the standards related to geographically separate campuses as well as to several new standards which have been implemented since our last site visit. We have identified a number of priority areas that we have begun to address prior to initiating the self-study. By addressing these priority areas now, I believe that we will be well positioned as we approach the LCME review as a fully integrated medical school with two tracks (Twin Cities and Duluth).
We have established a Steering Committee with representation from both campuses which will oversee the self-study process leading to the LCME review. Each of the five standard areas noted above will be addressed by distinct subcommittees which will be led by faculty and comprised of key faculty and students from the Twin Cities and Duluth. These subcommittees will be responsible for assessing the strengths and weaknesses of our program, highlighting program areas of excellence and addressing other areas which may need modification or major revision.
Regular interaction amongst the leadership teams and the faculty via Polycom, shared project management websites, visits between campuses, updates on this website, and “LCME Moments” provided at regularly scheduled meetings throughout the year will be the basis for building true integration as we begin the LCME review process.
We anticipate a productive self-study process and look forward to a successful site visit.
