Chapter Development Grants
Annual grants of up to $2,500 are available to ΑΩA chapters for support of projects that enhance academic excellence,
represent service to the medical or general community, or increase ΑΩA's visibility in the institution. The National
ΑΩA seeks to increase support of individual chapters and their community
service programs.
Chapter Development Grant - During the 2001-2002 academic year, the ΑΩΑ Chapter at the University of Minnesota Medical School, in collaboration with the Science Museum of Minnesota, was officially awarded a grant from the National ΑΩΑ to purchase an anatomic teaching model of the human torso. This torso, which has affectionately gained the name "Mel", is part of a medical student-led initiative to reach out to elementary, middle, and senior high school students in the community, and stimulate their interest in anatomy, the human body, and medicine in general. Curriculum for this initiative has been developed and is available, along with the torso, for interested students who would like to volunteer some of there time in the community. This is a great opportunity for any interested student, you do not need to be a member of ΑΩA to participate. Contact Ryan Brady, Jessie Roske or J.R. Walker for more information.
Chapter Activities
Individual ΑΩΑ chapters serve their medical schools and communities in many
ways. Some of the programs that the ΑΩΑ Chapter at the
University of Minnesota Medical School support include:
Science Museum of Minnesota - For several years, medical students at the University of Minnesota Medical School have been instrumental in leading educational activities at the Science Museum. For example, students display actual pathologic specimens of human brain, and then discuss topics such as Alzheimer's dementia and Parkinson's. Furthermore, the exhibit of the cardiovascular system is used by medical students to describe the various changes associated with heart disease, myocardial infarctions, and peripheral vascular disease.
