USMLE Step 2 Boards: passing score
For selection, an appropriate Step 2 score is: less important

Research experience: optional
For selection, medical school research experience is: less important
Research should be in the specialty area: no

Honors in specialty rotation: should have

Honors in core clerkships: should have

Election to AOA: is optional

Other Selection Factors:

Demonstrated team player, broad based clinical exposure/rotations, independent, take appropriate initiative, good grasp of the future technical advancements in medicine, good fit with current resident members of program, and knowledge of one's strengths and areas for improvement.

Recommended courses:

3rd or 4th year of surgical pathology rotation (best taken at end of year 3) and obtain board based patient care experience as pathology covers/encompasses all the specialties in medicine (primary care-ultra specialist).
