First appointments for counseling are within 2 weeks, first appointments for medication evaluations are within 3 weeks. Urgent Mental Health Consultation is available in person or by phone on weekdays. Open: Mondays, 8:00am-6:00pm Tuesdays to Fridays, 8:00am to 4:30pm.

Mental Health Counseling and Urgent Mental Health Consultation
Up to ten counseling visits per 12-month period are offered at Boynton's Mental Health Clinic. These are by appointment and the first appointment needs to be made in person. A staff of psychiatrists, licensed psychologists and licensed clinical social workers provide a variety of counseling options. Services available include: individual and couple counseling medication assessment/management urgent consultation (phone or in person) a variety of group therapies social work assistance

  • If you have paid the Student Services Fees and have hospitalization insurance, your first visit to the mental health clinic has no copay.
  • Additional visits will require a $10 copayment for individual psychotherapy, couples counseling and medication management.
  • If you carry the Student Health Benefit Plan, you will have a 20% co-payment.
  • If you carry the Graduate Assistant Plan, your co-payment will be $10 for all visits, including the initial visit and group therapy visit.
  • If you carry your own insurance, you will be responsible for the remainder of your balance after your insurance has been billed. It is your responsibility to contract you insurance company to understand what your benefits are.
  • If you wish to purchase Boynton Health Service's Extended Coverage plan, your co-payments will continue at the current rate of $10 per individual visits and $5 for group therapy visits.

Urgent Mental Health Consultation

  • You do not need to have an appointment to speak with a mental health counselor on an urgent basis
  • Call the Urgent Mental Health Consultation line at (612) 625-8475 and a clinical social worker will talk with you directly about what might be best to do about your concerns.
  • If indicated, you can be seen in person, often on the same day. In an emergency situation, the social worker will help you obtain emergency care at the appropriate place.

If you would like further therapy after the urgent situation has eased, you may be referred to another therapist in the mental health clinic or to another resource in the community. If medication is indicated, the social worker will help make arrangements for you to have a medical assessment.

No cost services from trained professionals. Confidential, no medical records of service. Average time to first appt is 1 week, but crisis walk-in counseling is available. Open weekdays: 8:00am-4:30pm

Personal Concerns Counseling: UCCS offers short-term counseling designed to address your real-life concerns [i.e. relationship concerns, financial issues, stress, depression, anxiety, test anxiety]. If you and your counselor feel that you would benefit from longer-term therapy your counselor can help you find resources offering such services.

Crisis Counseling: Emergency walk-in counseling between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. daily. Any student feeling an urgent need to talk to a counselor can call UCCS (612-624-3323) or go to 109 Eddy Hall and speak to a receptionist to see about the availability of a counselor.

Students with Disabilities: Disability Services works to ensure access to courses, services, activities, employment and facilities for all students, faculty and staff with disabilities. Any student with a documented disability who needs to arrange reasonable accommodations must contact Disability Services to be eligible for services.
 
The DS Health Science Liason, Barbara Blacklock, will assist eligible students with: securing documentation of disability conditions, determination and implementation of reasonable accommodations, information, referral, and consultation. 
 
Disability Screening: Disability Services provides a free screening service to students who suspect they may have a learning disability or attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. During the screening, you'll be asked to complete a learning skills inventory and then meet with a disability specialist to review the results and decide whether or not you want to proceed with a formal assessment. While the prescreening is free, you'll have to pay for the formal assessment yourself. We can provide advice and resources on this. Organization of University of Minnesota medical students that provides a supportive, non-judgmental, confidential service to fellow medical students who want assistance coping with school and non-school related stresses. CPAP members are not professional counselors. Student members can be contacted for any reason and at any time by phone, email, or in person. All contacts with CPAP members are strictly confidential. CPAP is not part of the medical school administration and CPAP shares no information with the administration.

A counselor will quickly respond to your call. When the counseling office is closed, an answering service will take your call and relay your message. In an emergency, a counselor will contact you immediately. You may discuss your concerns with a counselor by phone or a counselor will meet you at school or at your hospital.
